Weekend in Photos (Front Porch Edition)

Whew!! We are pooped but feeling good about the house progress over the weekend. It seemed like the entire State of Alabama was under some sort of flood watch from Thursday through Saturday (some parts probably are still), which put a damper on our front porch plans, but we made the most of it. We stayed indoors Thursday and got all the rafters and posts cut. Friday was pretty drizzly, but we were able to complete the front porch demolition. Saturday was a TOTAL wash as far as the porch goes; however, some much needed de-cluttering was done inside. Today, we got the new porch posts and headers in place! Demo is great, but putting new stuff in place is even better :) Steven and I are extremely grateful to our neighbor Craig for his hours of much needed help this weekend!

On with the photos...

Just a couple of "before" shots showing the state of things.

The rafters and beadboard were in pretty bad shape :(

Steven scraping off the shingles on Friday.

Wrapping up the demo. I was sooo excited to see the screened-in-ness fall away!

And then I was horrified when the screen almost hit our historic marker - eeek!

This is how things looked after cleaning up most of the demo debris. Craig called it "Grumpy House" since it's frowning, haha!

The sun FINALLY came out today, so we got the new posts and headers up! We went ahead and did some house wrap at this point too. The two windows that are covered will be replaced fairly soon.

Lookin' good :)

Here's where we ended the day. Don't worry guys, we'll be shifting the stairs over to align with the front door at some point ;)

During the week, the plan is to add the ridge beam and rafters - we'll let you know how it goes!

    1. Haha! I thought the house wrap made it look a little less frowny. We're getting there!

  4. I posted on the next blog, where you did the hip roof! I so appreciate anyone taking the time to post a blog with photos, and the work done, being explained in laymens terms that all can understand. This is great. I CAN build my own hip roofed porch!!!...lol....Thank you! I will be checking back. Good luck on your renovation. Photos look great!!! (and Stevens advice about a builders calculator is invaluable! I will be checking those out)

    1. Glad we could help. It took me a while to gather enough information to feel confident in this project but after some digging on my online membership of FineHomebuilding and a few hours in front of a 3d CAD program, I was able to figure out how many rafters and what lengths I would need. The 3d program isn't necessary but it did help me tie down exactly how many common rafters I would need and where they would lay. I would also say that it is a good idea to talk to your local building inspector because they can help nail down the particulars on what lumber to use where and how they want things attached to the house.

For the header we used the rule, "for every foot of span without support, add one inch of thickness". Our span between posts are seven feet so a 2x8 was the obvious size for the header span.

Also, make sure (just like in making a top plate) to have the ends of your headers meet over a post and stagger them. The two front pieces meet over the center post and the back is comprised of 3 2x8s that meet over post 2 and post 4.

      best of luck.
