Kitchen Progress: Old Sink and New Window

Only GOOD news in today's post!! Let's start with Monday's find: the kitchen sink. I was so set on a big, deep apron-front sink and figured we would just be buying a new one. BUT I happened to check for sinks on Craigslist Monday, and found this beauty had just been posted!

My only hesitation was the rather shallow basin (at least compared to modern sinks), but hopefully having a wall-mounted faucet rather than a standard faucet will make the basin seem deeper.

After our last post about the kitchen/dining subfloor, we hoped the next thing would be installing new ceiling joists. However, Steven met with one of our building inspectors this week, and he advised us to add some overhead framing reinforcement before putting in ceiling joists. It's basically a matter of adding a couple of heavy-duty beams, so it won't be a significant time/money setback.
On Friday, we had an exciting delivery of windows and doors, and we're expecting our front door and rear sliding door to come in next week :) It's going to be all sliding doors around the dining table since we (i.e., I) had concerns about having enough space for traffic around the table and allowing doors to swing. Pocket doors are just really cute and fun though, and I think I've always wanted one because the first pocket door I ever encountered was in my grandmother's house.

Here's a snippet of what we're working toward with the kitchen and dining rooms. I've really got to get Steven to do a more "technical" drawing... not exactly my thing!

Today Steven finished the framing for the pocket door.

We also installed the over-the-sink kitchen window today!!! This was not exactly a planned thing for the day and we've never installed a window before, but we've been mentally preparing for awhile. Steven found this tutorial from This Old House very helpful - thanks, Tom Silva! Here are the window installation shots:

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and Happy Father's Day to all the dads of both two- and four-legged children!

    1. Thanks! I've been a looker for quite awhile, but this was the first time I have actually followed through with a Craigslist purchase. Can't wait to discover more treasures!

  3. You sure do know how to make a good interior. Windows over your sink should be quite adequate since it can lessen the use of electricity because of the natural light illuminating the area. How's your place now? Good luck on your project! :)

  4. It does seem a bit shallow. It might slow down your sink usage when the water increases to a point that you have to wait for it to drain to continue. But if the water goes down quickly, then it shouldn’t be a problem.
